Community Coalitions

Coming together as a community. Creating positive change. Building relationships and promoting healthful living. Working together to advocate for youth and families and the pathways to help children thrive.

We are stronger, together.

Youth & Family Services of Haddam-Killingworth (YFSHK) facilitates two community coalitions (Healthy Community-Healthy Kids and IGNITE, an HK Youth Coalition). Both serve Haddam, Haddam Neck, Killingworth and Higganum with the goal of bringing the community together to promote healthy, positive lifestyles for youth and families and work, as a group, to coordinate services, encourage healthy lifestyles, share information and advocate for positive or needed change to benefit both coalition members and the community as a whole.

In May, 2019, YFSHK will reconvene an Early Childhood Coalition to work on behalf of the youngest residents of HK, and bring together the parents, caregivers, teachers and community organizations working on their behalf.

What Is A Community Coalition?
A community coalition is an alliance formed between individuals and/or organizations to work together towards a common purpose to benefit the local community.

What Are The Benefits Of A Community Coalition?
When trying to make change for good, support is an essential aspect. By creating a group of members that work towards a common goal, community coalitions find strength in numbers. Including multiple members from various sections of the community can help to heighten the voice of the movement as a whole, increase legitimacy and perhaps exert more influence over achieving that goal.

In addition, a community coalition often consists of a vast support network, which can help to provide resources such as funding or time. Throughout the process, members also find they build relationships with each other that can be continued even after the overall goal of the coalition has been achieved. This may especially be true when forming collaborative bonds across racial, gender, age, socio-economic or other often difficult divides.
